Why does the door close after the train enters the tunnel?

Posted by Bart on September 20, 2010

Darren, Two possible reasons: 1) Because it's better then having the door close while the train is still going through the tunnel. 2) Because the railroad's Legal Department decided they can prevent expensive law suits from people who are not authorized to go in the tunnel, but do so and get injured or killed.

The door closes so the fans can blow the fumes and smoke out the other end as the train progresses through the tunnel. The door will also close as a train is approaching from the opposite direction and will open just before the train reaches the doors and will close again after the train has left the tunnel to "air" it out.

Nice video! And look how close the top of that last double-stack is to the roof of the tunnel entrance! It seems a little too close, doesn't it?
