Remarks: It really didn’t matter what railroad’s adorned them, or what mountains they scaled, just as long as there were plenty of SD’s making full throttle assaults on a ruling grade, then the intoxicating romance would be there. Scene one finds a mixed quartet of SD’s climbing westbound between Lakehead and O’Brien on a part of the Valley Sub relocated around Lake Shasta, California over half a century ago. In scene two, a westbound Utah Railway coal train with four ex-SP SD45’s waits at the top of Soldier Summit, Utah as a rain drenched manifest crawls past eastbound. Scene three looks at a long eastbound Santa Fe piggyback laboring the last mile into the summit of Cajon Pass behind a rebuilt SD45 and a trio of SD40–2’s. Scene four features a pair of home road T’s leading a CSX SD40–2 and a Rio Grande GP30 eastbound between Woodford and Walong while climbing the Tehachapi Mountains. Scene five captures the efforts of two quartets of SD40–2’s, the lead one spliced by an almost inaudible C30–7 and the rear one by a fuel tender as they lift 110 cars of eastbound Powder River Basin coal around aptly named Windy Point on Crawford Hill. Scene six stars a westbound UP off the LA&SL climbing past Martinez Spur on Cajon Pass with a quintet of SD40–2’s arranged elephant fashion, while scene seven shows the SP version, all T’s, passing a UP powered eastbound empty coal train at Colton, Utah on the Rio Grande. In closing, scene eight looks down on an eastbound ascending the Tehachapi Mountains at Bealville behind a mixed trio that includes an 8–40BW in silver & red.

One of the best videos Ive ever seen, you have truly captured some of the best footage of the old spartan cabs as well as others in this amazing era. I'm giving this five stars not just because of one train, but because of an entire era that is lost to history. Thank you for sharing and well done.

This is the best video I have seen on Rail-Video's. Great scenery and more importantly, GREAT sound. Thank you Lowell for an excellent contribution.

Great video and audio! Makes me homesick for Cajon. And I really miss those tunnel swing helpers.

These scenes make me wish I'd been filming Stateside steam much earlier than 1999 when I started! Thank you Lowell for making it possible via your fabulous shots. And I love your descriptions - pure poetry . . .

Ah...miss those days. When a train grinding up hill would put a beat into your chest. It really made you feel like you were part of it. Thank you for posting.

Man, I miss those days and that was from growing up in the 80s and my high school years and before the mergers in 96, doesn't get any better than this man!
