The GSMR is one of my favorite railroad lines. It was the old Southern Railway Murphy branch that ran from near Asheville, North Carolina to Murphy. Southern Railway discontinued passenger service along the line in 1948. In 1988, Norfolk Southern filed to abandon the line; however, the State of North Carolina purchased the line before the rails were ripped out. Today, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is a popular tourist attraction.
