Got a story on that one...that train's likely on the NS Washington-Atlanta line. The railroad personnel also used to call the radio controlled units "slaves". One time in the mid-90s (when I and other train fans used to go to the Gainesville GA station and watch the trains at night on that same NS main line), I encountered the station manager, who was an interesting guy who as I recall sometimes wore a cowboy hat. Anyway, while I was talking with him the southbound manifest with a mid-train helper went by, and as the DPU passed I said "Well, there goes the slave". He responded (I paraphrase but not by much) "We got a memo from NS...We can call them radio controlled units, or this or that, but we can't call them 'slaves' any more." I never thought of calling a piece of machinery this was a bad term but the NS apparently did. |
