The center of Ashland is a quiet zone; bells only unless something is blocking a crossing or someone is being a real bonehead around the tracks. Ashcake Road to the south and Vaughan Road to the north are the last crossings where they will blow their horns while passing through town. That's not to say the friendlier crews won't blow any salutes, however, and the townsfolk are happy to wave back. I've been up there a few times when the crossing gates were malfunctioning (College Ave. and Myrtle St. are particularly flaky it seems), and the quiet zone is temporarily lifted in those cases.
