Remarks: Some parts of Donner are as breathtaking as any place on any railroad. One such location is this spot. The North Fork of the American River lies nearly 2200 feet below, a drop that abruptly begins just on the other side of the tracks. Looking straight down is not for the faint of heart.

Last fall, I took my boys on a hike down to the American River not far from where you shot this. It's a duesy. Two miles of 20% switchbacks. The trail is called, "Euchre Bar Trail".

You can see that from the California Zephyr, try to be in the Lounge Car to get the best view of it.
