Remarks: I've never seen any train run through dark signals, let alone fly through them at track speed.

I believe that the signals are only dark for the apposing tracks unless there is a train approaching in the opposite direction. The signals facing the oncoming train are lit, however you could not see them from your position. You see it a lot on the section of CSX's S-Line in Florida. Happy railfanning and stay safe!

From what I know, Amtrak P42s are equipped with cab signals.
