Remarks: An ill-informed engineer tells my brother and I to stop taking pictures as he brings his NJT express out of Princeton Junction station. Too bad photography of both Amtrak and NJT trains at the station are both perfectly legal. I think he may need to re-read his company's policies.

At least he didn't say anything about you shooting video. So, you're ok. :-)

That engineer has a serious case of the grumps.

Posted by FolkstonGuy on March 6, 2009

And I thought that railroading was all about the people... :-P

Posted by The Wolf on March 6, 2009

He didn't sound serious, but take it anyway and see if he says anything next time he is in.

If you just think of it as a nice addition to your video, so it's OK !

Posted by Fijir on March 12, 2009

He must of been upset because you didn't ask him to smile!

No, the engineer is not ill informed. You are in a restricted area - standing on the yellow line in the danger zone. Plus, a much better video would have resulted if you stood back farther. You are too close to the train!

Ill-informed = yes, he said to stop taking pictures not to move back. I am standing on the yellow line = false, the camera is, I am at least 6 feet to the left. If I had moved the camera to where I was standing, it would be in the way of a set of stairs therefore creating an issue with passengers coming onto the platform. Thanks for trying though.

I would have to admit. That is a little too close! My good retired railroad engineer friend would have a heart attack if he saw railfans THAT close to the tracks.

Like I said, I wasn't that close, the camera on a tripod was.

You get some jumped up security people telling people to stop taking photos of trains in the UK...and mabye some station staff. But I don't know of any train crew that say that to photographers. Most of them blow the horn if you make the right hand signals...No the hand signals arn't rude - Heh heh.

I can't believe he told you to stop filming, somebody definitely needs to read the policies put forth by NJ Transit!
