Remarks: The sounds of four old GE's overpower the lone GP30 as they pull train 171 up the grade from Beaumont Jct towards Hayne Yard. As was normal for train 171 back then, a Southern bay window caboose was bringing up the rear. A the beginning of the clip you can see another railfan, in a still fairly new Oldsmobile for the time, leaning forward to catch the neat show the old power was putting on that day.
Wow! Four U-boats and a GP30! I'm sure the crew didn't share my sentiments, as every engineer I've ever talked to was more than happy to see these leave the property. They still put on quite a show for us railfans though!
I really liked the sound of that P5 horn. It was decently in tune. That mixed-scheme power consist really reminds me of Middle Georgia in the 1980s, too (GP30s and GE 4-axle power still in SR paint). Thanks for this video, Greg.
Southern (as always) Serves The South! Good memories there...of classic southeastern railroading...with a Southern tank to boot!
thanks for posting another one Greg!
Did anyone notice the 1940's tankcar near the end? SOU 995093.
