Remarks: First generation cab units from MLW and GMD both meet at Burlington, Ontario for passenger stops. After the FPA-4 does it's Alco thing blowing smoke as she pulls away, I run ahead of the FP9A to get GMD's version of a sound show as she heads on to Toronto. Which sound show do you like best? Clips from DVD# VH8.

Its the GMD for me.

The Alco sounds better to me.

Thank you again for a good show. My vote is the FPA.

I like the MLW the best. In 2001, I got to take a ride on the Grand Canyon Railway, which has several former Via Rail MLW locomotives. The MLW FPA4 is a neat locomotive.

Which sounds best MLW or GMD? Hmmmm? I'm partial to the GMD sound but I won't complain if I hear the throaty MLW exhaust sound. I love 'em both! Keep those memory makers coming Kent.

The Alcos always sounded better idling, but the GM units had a throatiness when accelerating that's hard to beat. I worked on a lot of CN FP9s, GP9s and RS-18s in freight and those 2-cycle GMD/EMD engines always sounded great getting a heavy train under way. Now, ask me about looks. Alco/MLWs over GMs any day. The FPA4 is still one of the most handsome diesels ever. Alco's RS units had the Geeps beaten looks-wise as well, IMHO.

While I am partial to the GMD/EMD sound, they are both awesome!

The GMD sounds good indeed, but since I'm and Alcoholic Kent, I'll have to go with the FPA-4. Nice stuff!!! Jack

The FPA looks good, but the GMD sounds better.

You gotta love both of them, for me you can't beat the Alco's grumble and smoke, but I think EMD/GMD wins for making a prime mover that actually plays music!

Great video Kent! That's a tough question to answer, as I like both the GMD & MLW sounds. But if I had to choose one, I would pick the GMD in a close decision.

Ha ha! I just love this thread! While the EMD does sound like a music and is a better engine, the MLW burbles and gives out a turbo whine... Extra points for the smoke show makes me lean on the Alco side! Thanks again Kent.

Brings back memories... first trains I traveled on when I was young.

FPA-4 all the way, there will never be a classier or better sounding engine... ah the memories =)
