Remarks: I'm unsure as to whether the young woman driving was being examined or simply doing a check ride with an inspector. You see the usual pointing at signals and the schedule which is utterly regimented in Japan. A 300 series shinkansen runs parallel with us as we approach the stop at Toyohashi.
The reason for pointing and calling the signal is to ensure driver alertness. Japan was in the forefront of attempting to find a system to keep drivers alert and they found that the simple steps of having the driver point at the signal and call out the aspect was the most effective method. I remember this from a TV news item several years ago.
