Remarks: 9027/9023/9026 power up the grade into Branxton station after crossing a southbound loaded train heading off the single track section. Only one track was in use between Branxton and Whittingham Bank due to trackwork.

Would you explain the presence of the flag upon the near track, please?

Gday Pete The red flag signifies that trains are not to pass that point on that track, due to a closedown of the track for maintenance work. It signifies the start/end of the work area.
