Very nice clip! Love that K5H on 3000! And man... the smoke was incredible! Wish I had that here in Lansdale...

Love the Alco smoke, but one question rises. Why do Alco and MLWS smoke that much?

Posted by Bicot (Marc Caya) on September 13, 2008

They smoke because of turbo lag... The engines load up so fast, the turbo can't wind fast enough to feed enough air for a complete combustion, thus the heavy smoke when loading. Once up to speed, they're not that bad, especially when kept in good working order. BTW, thanks again Robert for sharing such gems.

I loved the smoke as well as everybody. I was pleased to see a "Widebody" M-420 in the consist Ex CN I assume. I thought most of them went to scrap and, I'm pleased to be in error !. Riding on the 4 axle "ZWT" trucks makes it mid 1970's era. Still has the smokey 251 engine V-12. quite different looks. no elegant "Snout" of the short hood and signature rounded roofline left over from the Steam era. the Sch'dy built C-420's were adorable.
