Remarks: Westbound coal is lifted up Mullen Pass between Tobin and Austin by an eclectic quintet of SD’s out front that include paint schemes from the UP, GT, CR, & BN. The two quartets of help spliced in every 37 cars are hand-me-down SD40’s, SD45’s, SD45–2’s, and even a rare SDP40.

Now that was POWER. With 13 engines at 3,000 HP each, that works out to be about 39,000 pound of torque down out of the drivers.Plus that sound, there is no other. Those EMD SD40's,you just don't get that quality anymore. There is No Locomotive before or after that has that Thunder. It pounds right into your chest.Brilliant,Absolutley Brilliant.

I love the going away shot with the exhaust filling the air. It must have been just awsome to be there.

What a show! I was cutting old ribbon steel on this pass in the late 70's as the sun was setting, trying to finish...when a similiar train forced us to off load our equipment and wait until it passed. New ribbon steel had been laid when the train came up the hill, dropping sand to keep traction. Sparks were flying off the new rail and the sound of those engines working as hard as these...was a sound and sight I'll never forget. The engines left steel as dust on the side of the rail...similiar to filings. Love the video...nice work Lowell!!

Great video, with an interesting group of power on the head end and then it is nice to see a solid set of MRL painted units as the helpers.
