Remarks: Cab ride aboard Salt Lake, Garfield & Western 65-tonner D.S. 5 from the Morton Salt Plant (near the old Saltair resort location) to Salt Lake City. This was an excursion sponsored by the Promontory Chapter, NRHS; Chapter President Les Tippie is the engineer. The trackage from the salt plant to the airport was removed not long after this trip, and the locomotive has since been sold to GATX and is now at a rail repair facility at Evanston, Wyoming. Don’t blink and you’ll see the SLG&W’s D.S. 2, a green 44-tonner, since moved to the Western Railway Museum in Rio Vista, California. Check out part 1 for the first part of the excursion from Salt Lake City out to the lake.
