Remarks: With rumours of the pending closure of Georges Plains staff station, I spent some time with the ASM to shoot video. The Electric Train Staff safeworking system is NSWR tradition which has today dwindled and will eventually vanish. Georges Plains is 252 km west of Sydney, and was a crossing loop inbetween Bathurst and Tumulla. Tumulla had closed, as had Wimbledon and later Gresham. Today the single line section extends 34 km from Bathurst to Newbridge worked under rail vehicle detection (single line track block). In this video you see the two machines, Bathurst to Georges on the right and Georges to Newbridge on the left. The bell codes were also an enjoyable facet of this system. 3 bells indicating the train had arrived, 2 bells that the train had departed etc.
Another classic mate!, Iwas fortunate enough to work on staff machines early in my signaling career,we used to look after the Standard guage to the Border.They were great things and built like a brick outhouse!,the last one I worked on about two years ago was overhauled "only" 25 yrs ago and still going strong till it was decommisioned,it was lucky to make it back to Sydney as several people wanted it!
